Meet Armel, One of Our Amazing Malagasy Guides

We work with only the best in Madagascar to offer our clients a memorable experience. A guide can often make or break this experience. We thought you would like a chance to get to know Armel, or Mel as he is affectionately known, one of our guides who consistently gets great reviews, such as this one  “Mel was absolutely fantastic! His enthusiasm and passion for his country is contagious. He was incredibly attentive to every detail, and to each individual need. He made our trip all the more enjoyable due to his organisation and care.” We chatted to him about his life and passions and what makes him such an amazing guide.

Where are you from?
I am from the province of Fianarantsoa (south of Antananarivo – Madagascar)

How long have you been a guide?
I have been a guide since 2004, after I finished my studies at University.

Why did you decide to be a guide?
To be a guide was my dream when I was at secondary school in Ranomafana National park area (I was 12 years old) because I loved to speak to foreigners and to show them a beautiful waterfall in the area. Later, at the University, in 2004, during the academic holidays, I would always go back home and the local guide association would train many young boys to become professional tour guides. From that moment, this job has become one of my passions as I also like travelling.

What’s your favourite part about the job?
I like to show many aspects of my country, its rich wildlife and amazing landscapes, its cultural variety. Spending time with my guests while walking or trekking, especially when spotting some animals, is an unforgettable moment.

Besides, I would never fail to invite them to visit a typical local Malagasy home for a cup of tea or coffee with the residents.
I am, at the same time, a photographer, so taking many pictures is also one of my favourite passions. The WOW effect is my favourite part about the job. For me, offering the best service to every client becomes an obsession.

Do you have a funny or interesting story that happened while you were working?
There are lot of funny stories in my mind during different trips. But the funniest one was when one of my tourists expected to see some penguins here in Madagascar as he had watched the cartoon movies” Madagascar” in his country!

What’s your favorite animal?
I love all the lemurs and all the birds in Madagascar,
At home, I have a cat and a dog.

What do you think people should know about Madagascar?
In my point of view, people should be well prepared with different information of the country (daily life, money to spend, health,) before their departure. During the trip, people should know that travelling in Madagascar is a new experience in their life.
