Mandrare River Camp – Mandrare River
From: $ 367.00 per person
Mandrare River, Madagascar – A three hours’ drive northwest of Fort Dauphin, in southern Madagascar, Mandrare River Camp is nestled under the shade of tamarind trees on the banks of the Mandrare River – the lifeblood of the region. Set in the grounds of an old colonial sisal plantation house, the camp is just three kilometres from the village of Ifotaka and opposite the sacred ancestral forests of the Antandroy Tribe.
Six large luxurious tents are generously spread out high up on the shady river bank, all with views across the tranquil water and the mountains beyond. With stone built bathrooms to the rear of the tents, hot water is supplied by a solar system so it is never in short supply. By no means primitive, this is most definitely a luxury camp with comfortable beds and delectable cuisine prepared on site from the finest of ingredients. A real treat are the fresh Parisian patisseries prepared at 4am every morning. With so much to see and do, Mandrare River Camp and surroundings are best explored on a three night camping programme. Activities include visits to the Sacred Gallery and Spiny Forest with its excellent sifaka and ring tailed lemur populations at both day and night, sample the local markets, visit the local villages and have sundowners in the amazing Baobab Forest.
All 40 river lodge suites have a stunning view over the reserve from private patios. They are equipped with air-conditioning, minibar, beverage stations and en-suite bathrooms.
The 20 spa suites offer close-up views and the ultimate bush experience with large glass doors and frameless windows. Seperated from the lodge and a little further away they ensure additional privacy and proximity to the spa for unique African spa treatments. The suites feature a minibar, beverage stations, safe, hairdryer and international plugs.
Like the spa spuites, the family rooms are positioned a little way from the lodge and have three balconies as well as additional bedrooms that can accommodate two beds for children .
The two royal suites have a sperate lounge, an extended balcony with recliner couches for relaxing and game viewing in the shade. You can overlook the surrounding bushveld and watch game from the en-suite bathroom equipped with a bath and a dual shower.
