Against the backdrop of the Tropic of Capricorn, Tulear (Toliara) is becoming southern Madagascar’s leading town. Called the “white city” because of its light-coloured buildings, most of Tulear is fairly nondescript. The town features some interesting churches, and is set against a backdrop of mangroves and mudflats.
The surrounding area offers numerous highlights including: great beaches, vast sand dunes, diving, snorkelling, surfing and kite surfing at Ifaty to the north and Anakao to the south. Views are amazing as the topography of savannah, bush and grassy plains melts together. In addition to the beach at Ifaty, popular travel destinations nearby include Sarondrano, Miary, Lake Tsimanampetsotsa and the Réserve Spéciale de Beza-Mahafaly. The Tropic of Capricorn crosses Madagascar just south of Toliara.
As travellers soon figure out, Tulear (Toliara) is amazing and centrally-located to everything that one really wants on a Madagascar vacation or tour: beaches, views for miles and spectacular nature!
